Ghosts of Christmas: The Lost Traditions – Burning Ash
Going back to the Anglo-Saxon times it was customary to burn bundles of Ash on Christmas Eve. Young English girls would cast bands into the fire in a contest to see who would get married first. The youngest boy in a family would be encouraged to stand on a bundle. The length of time they were able to remain on the burning Ash would indicate how brave they would be in adulthood. Now that’s a holiday tradition for sure! More lost traditions during the month.
