Monster Day 08: “Hammer Studios UK”
In the 1950s and early 1960s Hammer Studios UK got their pick of Universal Studios monster films to recreate (or reboot as its called these days). The main three series were The Mummy, Dracula, and Frankenstein. The series were very successful with a couple series running into the 1970s. Much like with the Universal films, Hammer’s horror flicks starred two actors that appeared in some or all of each series. UK’s Lugosi and Karloff were Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. More on this in Day 09’s article. The Hammers series were in color and gave fans a fresh bloody look at these classic stories. In some examples, the Hammer versions were far superior to Universal’s iterations.
