Monster Day 05: “The Age of Universal Studios”

1931.  Universal Studios offers young Director James Whale a job that would resonate to present day.  Whale set signed on to helm the film project Frankenstein.  The film would star Colin Clive as the Doctor proclaiming the famous line, “It’s Alive!!” taken from the stage play “It Lives!!” Frankenstein would feature Boris Karloff as the Monster aptly credited as ???  Trivia: Bela Lugosi had expected to play the role of Frankenstein but the studio wanted Lugosi to play the muted role of the Monster.  Bela turned down the offer.

The film was a huge success and garnered sequels starting with 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein all the way to 1948s comedy Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.  Frankenstein would catapult the careers of both Director James Whale and actor Boris Karloff.
